Golf Course
Nestled in the heart of Bhutan, the Royal Thimphu Golf Course (Tashi Tsethang) stands as a proud symbol of the country’s deepening appreciation for the sport of golf. The story of its inception dates back to 1971, when Bhutan’s first nine-hole golf course was built near the iconic Tashichho Dzong, under the personal dedication of Major General T.V. Jeganathan, Commander of the Indian Military Training Team (IMTRAT). Recognized for his passion for golf, Gen. Jeganathan transformed barren land into a thriving course with a unique layout, initially using browns instead of greens.
The vision for the course was strongly supported by the Bhutanese monarchy, particularly His Late Majesty the Second Druk Gyalpo, who shared a deep interest in creating a recreational space that would enhance the beauty of Thimphu and protect the surrounding areas of Tashichho Dzong from overdevelopment. In fact, it is believed that His Late Majesty’s own early experiences with golf, including a visit to the Tollygunge Golf Course in India, inspired this initiative.
Our History
The Thimphu Golf Club began with limited resources, but the community quickly rallied behind the course. Early golfers recall the commitment of individuals like Dasho Benji and Dasho Tobgay Sonam Dorji, who played key roles in fostering the sport’s growth. Thanks to royal patronage and continued support, including a generous gift of shares from Her Royal Highness Ashi Sonam Choden Wangchuck, the golf course flourished.
In the late 1980s, the course underwent a significant transformation with the help of international experts. The American architect Stephen Kay, renowned for his work in golf course design, transformed the course from browns to lush greens, elevating the course’s standards. Later, a major renovation in the early 1990s, funded by the Onishi Construction Company, improved the course’s terrain, drainage, and landscaping, further solidifying it as a premier golfing destination.

Today, the Royal Thimphu Golf Course stands as a testament to the vision, commitment, and collective effort of many individuals—ranging from generals and entrepreneurs to devoted golfers and local communities. At an altitude of 2,300 meters, the course offers breathtaking views and a challenging, yet rewarding experience for its members and visitors. As one of the most spectacular golf courses globally, it continues to embody the spirit of sportsmanship, friendship, and royal patronage that has shaped its rich history.
